A state of siege was declared in Ecuador Thursday amid battling between police and troops, with the president holed up for hours in a Quito hospital.
Police were rebelling over benefit cuts, reports the U.K.'s Press Association.
President Rafael Correa was addressing the protesters outside a police barracks when a tear gas canister exploded near him, causing him to choke, security officials said.
Correa called the incident an attempted coup d'etat.
