Probe Begins Following Navy Hornet Crash In Va. Beach

An investigation is underway after a Navy Hornet fighter crash in Virginia Beach.

A Navy F/A-18D slammed into an apartment complex shortly after takeoff on Friday, reports CNN.

The two-seat aircraft suffered a "catastrophic mechanical malfunction" and crashed 2.2 miles from the runway, said Navy officials.

The jet was from a training squadron at nearby Naval Air Station Oceana.

The Hornet was reportedly seen leaking jet fuel before going down; it was not know right away...
