Hamas, based in the Gaza Strip, has recently held secret elections for the leadership of its political bureau, say sources cited by Ha'aretz (Israel).
Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh won by a significant margin, making him the first recognized Hamas political leader since the assassination of former political chief Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi in 2004, group sources told the Israeli paper.
The elections were reportedly held less than two weeks ago.
