President Flees, Family Reportedly Takes Gold

In the wake of widespread protests, Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali has fled the country, Al Jazeera (Qatar) reports. He had ruled for 23 years.
Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi has promised a new coalition government.
Protests and violence continued on Monday, two days after the president left for Saudi Arabia. The army reportedly fired water cannons at hundreds of protesters in Tunis, the capital.
