President Approves Shutting Down Joint Forces Command

President Obama has accepted the recommendation by Defense Secretary Robert Gates to close the Joint Forces Command, reports the Virginian-Pilot (Hampton Roads, Va.).

About half of the command's capabilities will be maintained and assigned to other organizations, Gates said.

Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called for the deactivation of the command, which costs about $240 million annually to operate, reported the American Forces Press...
