Plans Set For Cossack Military Units

The Russian army has decided to create Cossack units beginning next year, reports Interfax-AVN.
Units will be formed in regions where conscripts are primarily Cossacks, said Gen. Nikolai Makarov, the chief of the Russian General Staff.
About 1,500 Cossacks now serve in the military. Formation of Cossack units is expected to encourage more to serve, the general said.
The Cossacks were originally members of military communities in European Russia and Ukraine.
