Budget officials in the White House have ordered the Dept. of Defense to cut $78 billion over the next five years, Defense News reports.
Pentagon officials "are scrambling" to determine how to meet the directive, which covers 2012 to 2016, sources told Military Times.
It is unclear how the total cuts will break down over the five years. About $12 billion in cuts are apparently directed at 2012, said a source.
