Vice President Mike Pence has called on European nations to withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, reports Agence France-Presse.
During a conference in Warsaw on Thursday, Pence criticized a new initiative launched by France, Germany and the U.K. that would allow European companies trade with Iran despite U.S. sanctions.
Rather than seek rapprochement with Tehran, E.U. countries should join the U.S. in withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear agreement, said Pence.
In January, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the conference, which was widely seen as an effort to gain support for the administrations more hawkish approach to Iran.
The conference received a cool reception among E.U. members, who did not send senior representatives to the event. E.U. foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini did not attend, although she met with Pompeo on Friday, reported Reuters.
Mogherini said that the 28-member bloc shares concerns over Iran but will not withdraw from the nuclear agreement.
