South Africa has ordered Paveway II laser-guided bombs from Raytheon, the company reports.
The sale represents the first major sale of defense equipment from the U.S. in 25 years.
Under the contract, Raytheon will provide the necessary material to transform dumb bombs into the precision-guided weapons, said officials.
The bombs will be used on South Africa's Gripen fighter jets.
Delivery is scheduled to begin in 2011. The value of the contract was not made public.
