Paramilitaries Morph Into Criminal Gangs

A growing number of new criminal groups are operating in Colombia, apparently the successors of defunct paramilitary groups, reports the Christian Science Monitor, citing a report by New York-based Human Rights Watch.
These new organizations have at least 4,000 members and are led primarily by former mid-level commanders of right-wing militias, says the report.
The groups are reportedly involved in murders and the forcible displacement of individuals and communities.
