Preliminary figures gathered by Western news agencies show that around 98 percent of voters in southern Sudan have voted to separate from the north, Bloomberg News reports.
The Southern Sudan Referendum Commission's website indicates that about 3.14 million voters favored independence of the 3.2 million ballots counted so far. There were about 4 million registered voters.
