The Russian nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky has stopped in the Syrian port of Tartus en route to Russian naval drills in the Indian Ocean, RIA Novosti reports.
A large Syrian naval delegation and the Russian ambassador to Syria visited the warship on Wednesday, navy officials said.
Moscow's only naval foothold in the Mediterranean is a small maintenance site near Tartus, staffed by about 50 personnel and three berthing floats.
