The U.S. Navy has relieved the commander of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, reports the Daily Press (Newport News, Va.).
Capt. William Kiestler had commanded the shipyard since June 2009.
The service lost confidence in Kiestler's ability to command due to a "loss of situational awareness" with respect to ongoing projects, including submarine maintenance, said a Naval Sea Systems Command spokeswoman.
