The Japanese Defense Ministry has been contemplating the establishment of a military force modeled after the U.S. Marine Corps that would be used to strengthen the defenses of remote islands in southwestern Japan, reports the Asahi Shimbun.
The plan being considered would reorganize the Ground Self-Defense Force's 8th Division, based in Kumamoto on the southern island of Kyushu, and infantry regiments of the 15th Brigade on Okinawa.
