New Defense Strategy Moves Away From Conscription

The Estonian Parliament has approved the Baltic nation's latest defense strategy, reports Estonian Public Radio.
The document emphasizes the importance of good transatlantic relations, countering subversive activity and the role of civilians in identifying threats.
Compulsory military service will be retained only as a method of staffing reserve units, says the strategy. The previous guidelines from 2005 called for all able-bodied males to serve.
