Navy Focus May Shift To Anti-Piracy Mission

Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa says Tokyo is considering shifting naval assets from Afghan support to anti-piracy operations near Somalia, reports the Kyodo News Agency.
The new Japanese government has decided to end the Maritime Self-Defense Force refueling mission in support of U.S.-led antiterrorism operations in Afghanistan on Jan. 15, 2010.
Under the proposed plan, the Japanese vessels would move to support international anti-piracy operations off the Horn of Africa.
