The U.S. Navy has signed a contract with Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuilding for two more Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers, reports Breaking Defense.
The $15.2 billion contract covers the completion of the Enterprise (CVN-80) and construction of the currently unnamed CVN-81.
Another $9 billion in separate equipment brings the cost for both carriers to about $24 billion, reported Defense One.
The Enterprise, which began construction in 2017, is to be handed over by 2028, while CVN-81, the fourth carrier in the class, is slated for delivery in 2032.
The block buy is expected to save around $4 billion over the life of the program, said Newport News Shipbuilding officials.
The deal also includes integration of the F-35C stealth fighter jet, Mk 38 gun system and MQ-25 Stingray drones, which is expected to save an additional $100 million, the Navy said.
The announcement came hours after details of a report from the Pentagon's operational testing office were revealed raising ongoing issues with the electromagnetic launch and landing systems on USS Gerald R. Ford.
