The U.S. Navy has just commissioned the first ship in a new class of advanced aircraft carriers, reports the Dept. of Defense.
The Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) officially joined the service during a July 22 ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk. Va.
The class is the first new aircraft carrier design to enter service in more than 40 years and will gradually replace aging Nimitz-class carriers, the Navy said.
