The Guatemalan army has expanded its efforts against Mexican drug cartels in the northern state of Alta Verapaz, Reuters reports.
Operations against the Zetas drug gang began last month and hundreds of troops were sent into the state on Tuesday, military officials said.
The nation's state of siege was set to end this week, but has now been extended for 30 days by presidential decree.
