The U.S. Naval Academy may assign midshipmen to become nuclear-qualified submarine officers if too few volunteer for subs, reports the Navy Times.
Not enough seniors selected the submarine career path this fall, leading the academy's administration to call for additional volunteers.
The academy is required to send 125 officers into the nuclear submarine training pipeline, but only 92 were accepted this fall, according to school officials.
