Sudanese government troops have clashed with southern army units in the disputed region of Abyei, Bloomberg News reports.
Five northern troops were killed and seven southerners were wounded in fighting on Wednesday near the Kiir River, called Bahr al-Arab in northern Sudan, a southern army spokesman said.
The fighting took place days after a deal was made to demilitarize the disputed border area.
