About 27 suspected members of a drug cartel were killed in a shootout with Mexican troops near the U.S. border on Thursday, the Guardian (U.K.) reports.
A reconnaissance flight spotted gunmen in front of a property in Tamaulipas state, military officials said.
As ground forces moved in, the gunmen opened fire and sparked a firefight.
Three apparent kidnap victims were also rescued during the operation, officials said.
