Bolivian President Evo Morales has resigned after the head of the army called for him to step down amid widespread demonstrations, reports BBC News.
Morales resigned on Monday after Gen. Williams Kaliman urged him to resign to maintain stability.
The military also promised to protect protesters from armed opponents.
Morales said that he was the victim of a coup.
