Sweden has stepped up military patrols on Gotland, a strategic island in the Baltic Sea, reports Reuters.
On Thursday, joint operations chief Lt. Gen. Michael Claesson said that Swedish troops were patrolling the harbor and airport of Visby, the main city on the island.
Claesson said the move was triggered in part by the passage of Russian landing ships through the Baltic Sea earlier this week.
Security conditions in the region have deteriorated in recent years, the general said.
