As the draft winds down, more young men and women have recently volunteered for the German army than expected, Defense News reports.
The recruiting goal of 5,000 by July has already been reached, with 5,500 recruits enlisting for 23 months of service, said officials.
In addition, 4,500 Bundeswehr conscripts have decided to stay in the military, said officials.
Conscription in Germany is scheduled to end on July 1.
