The Swedish legislature last week formally abolished compulsory military service, reports the Barents Observer.
The Swedish armed forces will become a strictly volunteer force beginning in July.
Officials expect 3,000 to 4,000 young men and women will apply for military service under the new system. Recruits will be enrolled in a three-month program, with the most promising invited to continue military careers.
