The Swedish government ended compulsory peacetime military service on Thurday, reports the Local (Stockholm).
After 109 years, the conscription program had been winding down of late as part of the development of a fully professional army.
An average of 5,000 conscripts each year have been serving in the military for 11-month terms, officials said.
