Al-Shabaab militants have ambushed and killed at least 15 government soldiers south of the Somali capital, reports the Voice of America News.
The attack took place about 100 km (62 mi) south of Mogadishu, the capital, on Monday, said a military official.
One military source said 15 troops or more were killed.
Al-Shabaab claimed there were 30 deaths. The militants also said they seized several military trucks.
