Syrian troops have begun an assault against a restive northern town near the border with Turkey, reports the New York Times.
Heavy gunfire was reported Friday morning in the village of al-Sarmaneyah, about five miles from the flashpoint town of Jisr al-Shoughour, local activists said.
Rumors of the impending military operation have led to a stream of thousands of Syrian refugees entering Turkey in recent days, reported the Jerusalem Post.
