The Indonesian government says it will station a marine battalion in the Riau Islands to strengthen security in the strategic Malacca Strait, reports Antara News, Indonesia's national news agency.
The marines will also work with police to combat transnational crime in the region, said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during a visit to the Riau islands in the region on Saturday.
The islands are vital to the nation's security and defense, the president said.
