The U.S. Navy has awarded Lockheed Martin and Austal USA contracts to build more littoral combat ships (LCS), Defense News reports.
With those awards, each company is expected to build at least 10 of the ships.
Both companies were able to reduce unit costs significantly below congressionally imposed caps, said Navy officials.
The program is expected to produce 20 ships between now and 2015.
