Lockheed To Build More Surveillance Aerostats

The U.S. Army has placed an order for additional Persistent Threat Detection System (PTDS) aerostats, reports Lockheed Martin, builder of the system.
The latest $142 million contract covers production of aerostats while final negotiations are completed, company officials said.
The PTDS, a tethered aerostat system, can stay aloft for weeks at a time to provide continual surveillance of broad areas.
The Army has operated the system since 2004.
