Lightweight Rifle Magazines Reduce Load On Troops In Afghanistan

British troops on the front lines in Afghanistan have received thousands of lightweight magazines for their SA80 assault rifles, reports the U.K. Ministry of Defense.

The new 30-round Magpul EMAG magazine weighs about 130 grams, compared to 249 grams for standard metal clips.

Since most British troops in theater carry up to 12 magazines, the lighter systems reduce their burden by about 2 pounds (1 kg).
