The Pentagon has called the U.S. Navy's new San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships "combat ineffective," according to a leaked evaluation cited by Defense News.
The ships are designed to transport Marine Corps forces to points offshore and position them for beach landings in separate vessels and aircraft.
The class is capable of operating "in a benign environment," Michael Gilmore, the Pentagon's top test and evaluation official, told Bloomberg News.
