Kurdish forces in northern Iraq, backed by U.S.-led coalition airstrikes, have begun an offensive to retake the strategic town of Sinjar from the Islamic State, reports CNN.
Capturing the town near the Syrian border would cut the supply line between the Islamic State stronghold of Raqqa and Mosul, noted the BBC.
Up to 7,500 peshmerga forces, as well as thousands of lightly armed Yazidi fighters, launched the operation on Thursday, reported the New York Times.
