The Sudanese government says it will keep its police forces in the disputed Abyei region near South Sudan, reports Reuters.
The oil-rich region has been fought over by Sudan and South Sudan since the latter gained independence last year.
The U.N. has called for troops to leave the area.
A force of 169 armed Sudanese policemen will remain until a planned joint police force is formed, said a Sudanese army spokesman on Thursday.
