Suspected Taliban gunmen assassinated the deputy mayor of Kandahar City Monday night while he was praying at the Sadozo, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Azizullah Yarmal was shot multiple times amid dozens of others at the service, said security officials. The gunmen escaped, and no arrests were made.
The New York Times referred to the deputy mayor as perhaps the most effective and admired public official in the city.
