Two new classified U.S. intelligence reports present a negative assessment of the war in Afghanistan, according to those familiar with the documents, the New York Times reports.
The National Intelligence Estimates (NIEs), one on Afghanistan and one on Pakistan, say there have been limited gains by U.S. and NATO forces, but predict there will be little chance of success unless Pakistan hunts down insurgents operating from havens in its tribal areas.
