The German army has awarded domestic firm Rheinmetall a contract for the supply of advanced infantry equipment, reports the Dusseldorf-based company.
An initial order covers the supply of the Gladius system for 900 soldiers (or 90 infantry sections), according to a Rheinmetall release. The value of the deal was not disclosed.
Units scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in 2013 and 2014 will be the first to be equipped with the advanced gear.
