Indian media reports that the country is planning to accelerate the development and deployment of fifth-generation stealth fighter jets. A committee comprised of high-ranking defense and research figures led by Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh is expected to submit a strategy report on the topic next month. Goals include a production and business model for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). The committee will also consider options for an indigenous 110-kilonewton engine for the AMCA, evaluating both local and foreign collaborative options. The decision comes as Pakistan announces plans to acquire at least 40 Chinese J-35A fighter jets. India’s homegrown aircraft programs, including the AMCA and the fourth-generation HAL Tejas light combat aircraft have been subject to significant delays in the past, pushing New Delhi to find ways to shrink timelines and improve efficiency.
