Improvements In Security May Lead To Smaller U.N. Force In Darfur

A top United Nations official says the security improvements in Sudan's western Darfur region will allow the peacekeeping mission there to reduce its size, reports the Sudan Tribune.

Herve Ladsous, the undersecretary-general for peacekeeping operations, said last week that some 4,000 personnel could be withdrawn from the African Union-U.N. mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

The mission currently has 23,447 military personnel, observers and police.
