Satellite imagery has confirmed that the oldest Christian monastery in Iraq was destroyed, apparently by the Islamic State, reports CNN.
Images obtained by the Associated Press show that the monastery of St. Elijah, close to the city of Mosul, was razed in late August or September 2014, not long after the area was seized by ISIS fighters.
Experts said the demolition was deliberate. Also known as Dair Mar Elia, the site had stood for more than 1,400 years.
