The Latvian government wants to significantly increase defense spending so it reaches 2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2020, reports the Baltic Course.
The Latvian defense budget is currently at about 1 percent of GDP. Reaching the goal will require spending increases of about US$28 million annually, said Maj. Gen. Raimonds Graube, the armed forces chief.
