Military expenditures worldwide jumped nearly 6 percent over the last year, according to a Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report cited by Deutsche Welle.
Total military spending in 2009 reached about US$1.5 trillion, an increase of 5.9 percent over the previous year.
Increased government spending aimed at combating the economic recession may have been behind some of the growth, SIPRI researchers said.
