On June 24, 2026, the German Ministry of Defense completely terminated the US$11 billion (EUR 10 billion) F126 frigate program. While Berlin initially explored salvaging the program by transferring the prime contractor role from Dutch shipbuilder Damen to Rheinmetall’s NVL division, a ministry review revealed the move would push total costs over US$20 billion (EUR 18 billion).
The Ministry scrapped the F126 program entirely and pivoted to a streamlined US$13.2 billion (EUR 11.6 billion) procurement of up to eight MEKO A-200 DEU frigates from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). With this decision, the German Navy drastically minimizes developmental risk to swiftly restore its North Atlantic deterrence posture.
