Defense Secretary Robert Gates has urged a long-term U.S. military presence in Afghanistan as "tenants" on bases jointly occupied by Afghan security forces, the Washington Post reports.
Gates made his comments to an Afghan media outlet and his remarks were released Wednesday.
Any such move would take place after the conclusion of the combat mission, which is currently scheduled for the end of 2014, he said.
