Fuel-Efficient Amphibious Ship Set To Be Commissioned

The U.S. Navy will commission its newest amphibious warship Saturday at Naval Air Station North Island, Calif., reports the Navy NewsStand.

Makin Island (LHD-8) is the eighth and final ship in the Wasp class.

The amphibious vessel is also the first of the class to be built with a hybrid gas turbine engine and electric drive propulsion system, which is expected to save nearly $250 million in fuel costs over the lifetime of the ship, says the Navy.
