The first president of Zambia following its independence from the U.K. has died, reports This Day (Lagos).
On Thursday, Kenneth Kaunda died at the Maina Soko military hospital in Lusaka. He was admitted to the hospital on June 14 to be treated for pneumonia.
Kaunda was a key figure in the independence movement in what was then Northern Rhodesia, becoming president after independence in 1964. He served in the post for 27 years.
