Former U.S. Army Defector Dies; Called Defection 'Biggest Mistake'

A former U.S. Army sergeant who defected and spent 40 years in North Korea has died in Japan, reports NPR.

Charles Jenkins, 77, collapsed outside his home on Monday and later died in the hospital, reported BBC, citing local media.

Jenkins spent four decades in North Korea, much of it in prison.

While stationed near the Demilitarized Zone in South Korea in 1965, he crossed the border into North Korea and was taken hostage.
