The former chief of joint staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army has been sentenced to life in prison for corruption, reports the South China Morning Post, citing state media.

On Wednesday, a military court convicted Gen. Fang Fenghui of giving and receiving bribes, reported Xinhua, China's state-run news agency.

Fang's illegal assets would be confiscated, said the court, without disclosing their value.

Gen. Fang is one of the highest-profile military officials ensnared in President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign that began in 2012.

Fang was considered close to Zhang Yang, a fellow CMC member who committed suicide in November 2017 while being investigated for corruption.
